It's been awhile since I've done a Lush product review and I thought it would be a good time to do another, and change up my review process for it as well. I used to just basically sum up the product, the pros and cons and whether or not I thought it was worth buying, because hey, let's face it, Lush can be pretty expensive sometimes.
This isn't the case for their Fresh Face Masks. They are all relatively cheap, at $6.95 a pop and you get a good 3-4 uses out of each pot. Another great thing about Lush, is that if you keep your pots, you can get a free fresh face mask for every 5 pots you return!
I don't have a go-to face mask yet - aside from Mask Of Magnaminty, because that stuff is ah-muzing! But as for the fresh face masks, I've been trying a different one every time I get a chance. Cupcake is the second mask I've tried so far. It's made for young, oily skin and it's main ingredients are cocoa powder, spearmint oil and Rhassoul mud. I don't have oily skin but I couldn't resist the smooth creamy texture and sweet chocolaty smell.
My first impression of it was WOW - this smells so good, I want to eat it! My second impression of it was this is going to get messy. And I was right. Cupcake goes on really easy. It spreads like butter all over your face and there's almost no clumping or abrasive ingredients. I got a little in my hair and on my knot wrap but it came out in the wash, which was surprising because it's chocolate.
I kept this mask on longer than you're supposed to because I like to throw a mask on and sit in the tub. Plus, the girl at the store said it would have a cooling sensation, which I love. This didn't happen for me, for any three of the times I've used it. Cupcake dries pretty quickly and once you're ready to take it off, gets quite messy. The first time, like I said, I sat in the tub and when I was done I just washed it off before I pulled the plug to shower. It was pretty difficult to wash off and I ended up rubbing most of it off dry because it was easier. Not a deal breaker by any means, but, it left a HUGE mess in the bottom of my tub. It took me awhile to get it all to go down the drain.
The second and third time I used it, I made sure I rubbed most of it off dry over a paper towel, for easy clean up and to avoid clogging the sink drain. The remainder was rubbed off with a cloth and then I took a shower. It doesn't seem like it would be that messy, but it is.
The Verdict: Did it do anything for my skin? Besides feeling like I just rubbed chocolate frosting on my face, no. But it's nice smelling and feels good when applied (because it's cold and creamy). Over all, it didn't make my face feel cool and fresh, which is what I look for in a cleansing mask. It did, however, rid any excess oil in my T-zone, which is my bad spot. So, it did serve it's purpose.
Worth it?: I got three generous uses out of one pot which is pretty good, especially for $6.95. These face masks are fresh and have a short life expectancy so you need to use them within a week or two of purchasing. But it's good to use them every couple of days anyway. It's definitely worth their price, and it's cheaper than most of the facial cleansers Lush carries.
I rate Cupcake a 3.5/5. It was fun and smells great, but I probably wouldn't use it again because of the mess and because it doesn't really serve as something my face would benefit from. I would recommend it for anyone who has really oily skin because it does effectively remove any unwanted shine. Also, I suggest trying all the masks to find which one suits you best and the more pots you use up, the more free masks you get! Win, win!
What's your favourite Fresh Face Mask?
Wow! This just goes to show how differently products work for people. Cupcake is my holy grail, the best mask i've ever used! I also like Origin's Charcoal and Queen Helene's Mint mask but those both dry me out a bit too much. Cupcake always sucks out impurities while leaving my skin soft and balanced. I agree that it is completely messy to get off, but I always do it in the shower and rub with a washcloth.
ReplyDeleteI've tried BB Seaweed too and I liked it better, but I do prefer Mask Of Magnaminty because it leaves my skin so soft, clean and fresh feeling and it lasts so much longer than a normal cleanser!
DeleteI think I might give it a whirl and see how I get on
ReplyDelete!
It is a lovely face mask - but just not for me!
DeleteI love cupcake so much. As you know my skin has always been problematic, I break out, have an oily tzone & then dry skin by nose & mouth. For me cupcake helped with breakouts, & soothed my dry spots. I wish I had a never ending supply of the stuff (or they could sell them online) because it's the best mask I've used from lush. The mess is worth how this helps my skin.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great review! I looooooove LUSH products and have been meaning to post my own review of my skin care routine using them. Thanks for the insight to the face masks!
