Practicing Portraits

Recently, I've been eager to get better at taking photographs. I mean, I'm always practicing and learning new things about my camera. I can take good photos. But, I want to really push myself to be able to take great photos. Capture beautiful moments. One of my main focuses this Fall is going to be taking family and baby photos. And what better way to start than with my wonderfully gorgeous and hilarious nephew, Torin. Just look at that face!
These photos were taking with a 50mm 1.8/f lens in the mid afternoon with zero shade. I received it for Christmas last year and I used to have such a hard time using it because it wasn't easy to focus in the bright and harsh light of winter here. But I realized how easy it was with a little patience, a better eye, and a better idea of what areas and times of day work best. I also think I know quite a bit more about my camera now than I did last year. These photos of Torin turned out really well in my opinion. He did most of the work. Seriously.. look at that face without smiling.. you can't.
I'm photographing my good friend and her family in a week and I couldn't be more excited! Does anyone have experience with portrait photography and if so, is there any tips or advice you'd like to share? xo
